I got together a report of
"place of birth" for direct ancestors (starting with my parents) just
to see where in the world the Kirkpatricks (etc.) and
the Backmans (much more mono-culture – all good
Swedes) came from. There were a few surprises:
- Switzerland: Thomas Kirkpatrick's mother (name unknown)
- my 4th great-grandmother
- Brazil: Hendrick Aertsen Van Amburgh born in
1644 in Recife - my 9th great-grandfather - on the Wells and Van Kleek side of the family. Probably the offspring
of Dutch traders. He eventually emigrated
to New York - had a daughter born in Kingston, NY in 1669.
- Canada: Marie Anne LeRoy born
07 May 1673 St Joseph, PQ (Province of Quebec?), Canada. She
was the offspring of French parents that must have emigrated
to Canada before moving on to New York. She was my 7th great
grandmother - also on the Wells and Van Kleek
side of the family. Other interesting note: she married Hugo Freer
who was the son of one of the founding members of the Huguenot town
of New Paltz, N.Y. (I'll have to do a
section on the Huguenots another day)
- Spain: Godhilda Bore born in 965 in Barcelona, Spain (of French
parents). OK, that one is kind of a stretch. Every other line I
chopped off at 1500 feeling that anything before that year seems even less
likely to be accurate than what I did include. But, I just had to
leave Godhilda in there for both the place (the
only Spaniard) and the wonderful name. Anyway, Godhilda
is traced back through Alice Mae Carder (married Charles Kirkpatrick),
back through the Caleb Hill who was shot in Vermont in the war of
1812, further back through a marriage to John Robinson (pastor to the
Pilgrims - but didn't make the Mayflower run), and on 20+ generations
before that. If she is actually an ancestor, she would be my 31st great grandmother.
For your further amusement, here is
the long list of places of birth - first the US births (broken down by state
and city) then the international births with county/shire/whatever (if known)
and city.
